Why is it so black and white?

What do you use instead? My main reason for using Amazon is the shipping which no one else can come close to

Same or next day shipping on most things I order is wild, when something goes beyond a 2-3 days on Amazon it even feels odd

And the “do you actually need the item/s that fast” isn’t the response I am looking for

Target/Walmart/BestBuy. They both have fast shipping options as well as store pickup. Sometimes (if you live somewhere more rural) they have _faster_ shipping times than Amazon.

I'm not in the US, but friends there tell me that Home Depot routinely delivers from the local store within a few hours.

(Here, unfortunately, their web site is useless crap.)

Walmart / Home Depot / Lowes / Kroger are generally going to beat Amazon on quickest delivery for most people for most items, if they want to, by virtue of their local brick and mortar footprint.

One reason I imagine Amazon pushed so hard for short delivery times was knowing eventually their legacy peers would leverage this against them.

Not to mention a long delivery time gives people more opportunity to simply go to the store and get something, while they’re out running other errands.

I live in a well populated suburban area. If I’m willing to actually leave my house, I can get most things much faster than Amazon can deliver them. This also helps keep those local businesses running, so shipping doesn’t become the only option in the future.

Shop.App doesn't have everything, but they do have a lot and many merchants have fast shipping options. I always try to search them and Newegg before trying Amazon.

Newegg marketplace is a funny place. Not only many items are more expensive than elsewhere, I had my orders delivered literally in Amazon or Walmart packaging. There are genuine merchants that made a choice to work with Newegg but there are many resellers from other stores as well.

Home Depot/Lowes often have faster delivery than Amazon (like literally delivered in a few hours or next day morning).

I live in the country. Amazon takes days to ship out here, though sometimes it has 1-2 day. Walmart has same day shipping (not delivery, regular shipping) and is cheaper or comparable to Amazon.

Honestly not even touching on what the thing actually costs on its own, I don’t like the idea of signaling to people so clearly that I had 2k +tax to spend on a cell phone

I use it informally as a metric for whether there is anything meaningfully bad that I should be aware of. If this is what people bitch about, then probably the product is mostly pretty good.

I couldn't agree more with the criticism being too much. The negativity adds up and drowns a thread so much faster than the neutral comments. I don't know the reason it feels that way. And it seems so pervasive in so many places.

I wish there was a way to just put all criticism in a single thread and leave other thread trees for technology topics. Of course my first thought is a technology answer to a human problem.

That said, I simply couldn't sit through this presentation and did find it insufferable; and I've been waiting for a foldable iPhone for a long time. Having to close the presentation out of frustration tainted my purchasing decision.

Just curious, how exactly do you propose they do this instead?

Rent out a convention center, open invitation, and then still complain when all xxK slots are taken up?

Or do it virtually and inundate these startups with thousands of requests and get mad when half don’t get responded to?

Outlaw private capital altogether and force people to IPO to raise money? And then what, complain when only a fraction of those companies work out and the average guy with an E*trade account not in on the joke gets screwed over and over?

At least YC takes applicants and the process is somewhat transparent

Of course there’s a (prob big) element of who you know going on, but it seems to me like the least shitty approach if your goal is to make this at least somewhat accessible

This aspect of yc is good - I know plenty of come from nowhere, unprivileged backgrounds who got into yc and were able to start a company

Now, they fact a lot of them get super douchey once they are in is a different story

Look at cable tv - even after going premium, you eventually wound up paying for ads anyway

In that case, you could make the argument that you could still purchase premium channels like hbo to avoid ads, but the internet doesn’t work that way - you depend on all the content generated by those ad funded channels

You could argue that Netflix changed that, and that’s why I said won’t change for a long time. I don’t think anyone’s discovered the business model yet that will keep content free for consumers while still generating revenue for companies

Does anyone else hate how Google Maps zooms in right before a turn?

Yeah go ahead and completely change the scale of what I’m looking at a night quite predictable time just as I’m about to need the map the most to make a turn on a street I’m not familiar with

This is why I use Apple Maps and thankfully in the Bay Area it’s more than at parity, it’s frankly better

All that said, this UI is actually awesome - just needs a little tweaking for the turn animation but I’d 100% use this - incredibly intuitive

I’ve used Claude exclusively for the past few months

Was excited when Sol came out a few weeks ago and loaded it up

I made the mistake of treating it as if it were Claude - I’d assumed they were close enough in ability and treated them that way

Well, turns out my instruction sets for Claude are 100% too complicated for Sol

Sol made the stupidest assumptions, constantly did things that it wasn’t asked to do and always approached code in what I considered a weird way - I had redo a lot of my prompts to get it anywhere close

Now, did it do good work?

Yes, on occasion. But with LLMs and coding, consistency is the name of the game. Constantly having to correct the LLM and constantly feeling paranoid that it won’t listen makes for an exhausting session

Maybe if you “came up” in the codex world you’re more fluent with it, but sticking with Claude for now
