That's an excellent point. Strange enough, you described the original ethos of google news. Google news was created in the mid 2000s to give a broad and counterbalancing view of news. It was intended to show not only what "we" were saying about an event, but also what "they" were saying about it. This naturally didn't sit well with our news industry and it didn't well with their news industry and they pressured google to curate and localize the news. For a brief period of time, when idealists ran google, google news offered a broad view of the world. Sadly, now everything is localized, even search.
People outside of finance really underestimate how important excel is in the finance world. It really is the lingua franca ( or the universal software ) of the industry. It is so entrenched that even google hasn't been able to move the dial. One of the major selling points of google spreadsheet is that it is free. What google didn't realize is that finance companies are wealthy enough to afford to buy or license software. As poor high school or college students, we all used google spreadsheet, but in the industry, we all use excel.
There are so much sunk costs ( decades of excel worksheets and decades of technical know-how ) that most companies aren't going to switch to another spreadsheet and migrate all that data and retrain their employees.
As a long-time finance developer, I can attest to this. I think the only company that will be able to kill Excel's dominance in finance is Microsoft, and sometimes I think that they're trying. It seems the past few releases (basically 2013 on) have alienated a lot of power users by needlessly shuffling the menus/toolbars, adding lots of graphics that slow down sheets and add nothing for people who already know how to use the app, and not keeping a laser eye on memory consumption/performance issues.
That's interesting. I've never done drugs, but I'm very interested in consciousness and neuroscience. Both modern philosophy and neuroscience appear to be converging towards the idea that the "I or the self" is an illusion and that consciousness is a predicting machine. So the drug caused your consciousness or brain to create multiples illusions ( or multiple "I's" ).
Some fashionable philosophers and futurologists share this view, but it is not backed by any new factual findings. To me the statement "the self is an illusion" is borderline oxymoronic: who is it that is having the illusion, if there is no self? An "illusion" is by definition an incongruence between objective reality and subjective perception. And subjective perception requires, necessarily, a self.
It is a big deal. It's not everyday that an exec of a major company gets arrested - especially one so politically connected.
I'm guessing this is just a continuation of the trade war we've been having with china and we told the canadians to arrest the CFO to send a message to china. She was probably targeted because she was important enough to matter but not important enough to go to war over.
It'll be interesting how china responds. I doubt china would go after one of our execs but I wouldn't want to be a canadian executive in china.
It depends on the level of password complexity. A standard 8 letter password with recommended complexity would generate a search space of a few hundred trillion passwords. That would take a very long time, but certainly, not forever. Now GUIDs will give you a run for your money.
People wanted and used google precisely because it was "unbiased" and "unlocalized". It's why it became so popular.
The only reason for the biased localized results is due to corporate pressure from media and news industries.
Also, you are conflating localized and unbiased results with spam and scam. Nobody is saying google shouldn't remove scams and spam. People are just saying they want unbiased results.
