And the throat incision clip

Google is so anti open it's the new Microsoft. I hope for a day when my phone runs nixos with Qt apps. Qt is so much better than java that I'm sure I'll be able to make do in 4gb what android takes 16gb for.

In the era of hallucinated apps, this doesn't even seen like an imaginary wishful scenario.

> Google is so anti open it's the new Microsoft.

You can unlock a Pixel's bootloader and install GrapheneOS. It would be highly ironic if the Jolla's was locked.

GrapheneOS seems to focus on privacy and security, not freedom.

This makes no sense. GrapheneOS is open source, while SailfishOS isn't. On top of that, GrapheneOS is much more secure.

I understand your disdain for fandom but in this case this isn't a product by framework. This is a 3d part product resulting from framework's basic motivation and associated actions of nurturing a 3rd party ecosystem. I don't like fandom but we can admit framework's theoretical raison d'etre is pretty good

It's over. Open models and chinese models will make fast progress and that nvidia+ms 128gb monster is what everyone will end up buying. sama can go back to running scams.

I'm worried about the carbon footprint and other impacts of the higher temperature

Are there any rough estimates on popularity of lua implementations? At this point it feels lua means luajit

not even close, because there are a lot of places where you can't run LuaJIT

Where can you not run LuaJIT? Genuinely curious

anywhere that does not allow self modifying code such as app stores.

Wasm and platforms like iOS and Nintendo Switch (I think).

LuaJIT is not just a JIT, it also includes high speed interpreters for x86, Arm, and more.

What are some pragmatic embedded scripting languages of choice these days if one has to consider:

1) Ease of learning, ideally minimal deviant behaviour (eg i consider lua tables to be a new concept in itself)

2) Reasonably fast. Not as much as lua jit but even half would be good enough

3) Mature

4) Has Rust bindings

Lua. Lua tables are easy and awesome. My hobby language unites Lua tables with functions too.

Like him or hate him, Venezuela has been quite literally a fabulous win.

Fabulous win in what ways, and for who? I'm genuinely asking, as I haven't followed the country much. From what I have read the same corrupt repressive regime, the one that ran the country into the ground, is still in place while the democratic opposition that had shown some life in recent years has gone silent.

The pro argument I find most convincing is that the US's interest is mostly in restricting oil going from Venezuela to China, which previously was the majority destination of of Venezuela's imports. A similar case can be made for Iran.

China possibly expecting something to this effect has recently built up both it's coal and renewables capacity, as well as an extremely large SPR.

Any claim at all that Trump is running any sort of strategy against China blows right up the second you look at anything else he has done.

All his bullshit market screwing, tariffs, poor diplomacy has pushed everyone right into China's sphere of influence.

Instead of competing with the products China creates, we leave them out of our own market while the rest of the world continues to buy from China.

The stupid as hell war against Iran has eliminated our stocks of munitions, leaving the pacific basically undefended against China. We pulled weapons out of our Pacific allies to go waste them in the desert.

There is no cohesive strategy and China has been preparing for us to cut off their oil for over a decade now, and has made massive strides in the development of independent energy like Solar to protect them.

imo this sort of strategy is not decided at the POTUS level, or at least there's consensus. For example during Biden's term the trade war largely persisted or expanded.

Competing in terms of production is realistically not an option (Triffin Dilemma, strong currency means exports other than tech/finance are inherently noncompetitive). Competitive exports would require giving up the dollar as a unilateral reserve currency, and China for the reverse reasons, at least for now, does not seem to want the Yuan to be a reserve currency. My personal read is both sides wish for something like the current system to persist but on more favorable terms.

I agree China has been actively taking steps for this scenario, but that they're continuing to make strides seems to indicate it is still an issue. I think we're still in the thick of it before a victor is conclusively decided either way.

Yeah, but did you considered that democracy was never a goal? Republican party is in full swing to destroy American democracy, why would they seek to create one in Venezuela?

Bribes and oil were the goal. Consolidation of allied dictator was goal. That worked.

That's not a bad policy, considering America's disastrous history of spreading democracy and then finding out those voters want different shades of fascism

America has a disastrous history of propping up dictators who are overthrown and replaced by governments who can then justify anti-Americanism as a populist political strategy.

America has more history of destroying democracies and actively proping/helping dictators then of trying to create democracies.

It did made germany democratic after wwii. That really happened. But then it has stream of helping dictators and killing democracies while being acting confused when locals did not appreciated it ... and when different violent movements joined the game.

America is even supporting fascists parties all around Europe right now. If they win, it is going to be mainly eu dysfunction. But it will also be true that America actively sponsored fascists and actively undermined democracy in Europe.

> spreading democracy and then finding out those voters want different shades of fascism

Where exactly this happened, really?

> Where exactly this happened, really?

Iraq, Egypt, Gaza, Post-Soviet Russia comes to mind among others

Any government that isn't democratically chosen is illegitimate. Better a democratic fascist government than a dictatorial fascist government, which will have to be more brutal to maintain power.

And you suppose the Nazi party that had won a large enough of the seats to enforce democratic consensus is also better than any alternative?

Do you think a government not supported by its populace would have fared better? Unless it brutally represses it's opposition, it would be violently overthrown by the government that the people wanted, and then that government would do what the people wanted. The solution to a bad government isn't to install one that doesn't have the support of the people it governs.

What I am saying is that as often missed by American policy makers, bringing Democracy does not make a population automatically Liberal, and they often vote for disaster for both them and for the US.

Also, contrary to your theory, most of human history people were ruled by non-democratic governments that were deemed legitimate, so I think you are conflating the two

> bringing Democracy does not make a population automatically Liberal

Nobody believes this to be the case. What is more often missed by policy makers is that overthrowing a government supported by the local population is unpopular and will cause blowback. The CIA-supported coup in Iran is a currently relevant example.

> Also, contrary to your theory, most of human history people were ruled by non-democratic governments that were deemed legitimate

That was when people believed in the divine right of kings, so those kings ruled with the consent of the governed. This is no longer the case. Nobody believes in the divine right of dictators.

Literally nothing has changed except for the names though?

In what sense exactly? Apart from that they caught a high-level criminal in a questionable way?

Yeah, slightly changed market for something that didn't matter that much to begin with. Its was a successful military operation. A fabulous win is WW2, ending the Cold War or things like that.

As much as I hate to say this, I'm afraid that Musk is abusing his capital power and Grok Build will end up as the top model eventually.

I tried it on a couple of projects and was (pleasantly?) surprised how good it was. I have no doubt in my mind that spacex needs to be broken up before they grow too big because grok build is going to be the future coding model of choice

> grok build is going to be the future coding model of choice

This is a BIG statement, especially considering current benchmark scores, can you expand more, why do you think so?

What a weird thing to suggest. This model is worse than some Chinese models from last year, which were already worse than frontier models from last year.

This looks like a worse Deepseek V4 pro. Costs more, dumber, slower and more verbose than most modern Chinese releases.

Seeing how those Chinese releases are in various states of open source, I would hope a competitor could at least match them.

They're going to have quite a tall ladder to climb to become the "top model". Currently on LMArena they're nowhere near the top [0] in any of the important categories.

The coding index is at 51 while the others are at 75

Musk's 'capital power' is spread thinly, as both xAI and SpaceX need ongoing enormous funding and have debts.

Google raised the same amount as SpaceX IPO at the same time, it just didn't get as much attention outside of financial and tech press

https://techcrunch.com/2026/06/03/alphabets-record-breaking-...

The other big players (MS/Goog/Meta) have solid businesses already and both OpenAi and Anthropic are IPO'ing soon.

Musk over bought compute and is renting it out, many of the co-founders of XAI have quit, so doubt they will dominate any time soon.

SpaceX is cashflow positive.

Buying compute that others pay a premium for is not over-buying. Note that $85b GOOG raise is for … building compute they don’t have.

The SX bond issuance reportedly has $90b in demand; they took $25b.

With all of those in mind, it might be worth updating your take on the relative capital power. I’d term it significant. Knowing Musk he will be investing aggressively where he thinks matters over the next few years.

Space-X invests a lot into R&D for Starship which they need to make starlink scale.

They also need it to at least show that in theory they can put a datacenter into space (which is stupid because it would take 300 starship flights to bring up their small colossus dc into space which is only 200MwH).

They also increase the price of Starlink, have to shell out money for cursor.

They overbuyed because it clearly shows that Grok is not frontier or people don't like to use it for other reasons.

Of course Musk has to invest, if what he thinks matters and is susccessful is another story like Cybertruck or his Datacenter idea or his dysonsphere 'idea'.

Musk didn't become the richest man in the world by accident, he is a formidable talent with deep connections.

But no indication that XAI will lead the field any time soon.

I cannot comment on the likelihood of xAI being competitive as an AI lab in the future.

However, their "overbuying" of compute means they can now rent it out for $2.32B/month.

That seems like solid business to me, and raises the question whether your claim of xAI needing 'ongoing enormous funding' is accurate.

Most of that is from Anthropic which is IPO'ing?

Prior to IPO they want to show the best growth numbers possible, so how long they continue with the deal post IPO remains to be seen.

54% is Anthropic.

Considering their models had outages with the message 'model overloaded' just a few days ago, I doubt that their compute demand is ending soon.

It clearly shows that the billions investedin xAI are not returning what they should with the product they invested in.

Use grok build. They've got some pretty cool things going
