You just solved a decade/s old personal mystery!

I randomly saw an episode of some show with these doozers maybe 20 years ago, and I have occsionally remembered them and wandered who they were ever since!

This one drives me particularly crazy.

One can imagine overzealous parents tactically causing a scene to nullify a match result.

I used to have something like this as an adolescent/teenager, but while I was awake. It’d feel like my whole body became enormous and numb, and if I closed my eyes I’d see cascading geometric shapes collapsing in on themselves, and it would feel like I was falling constantly.

So I’d just slowly put my head on the desk and ride it out until I was returned to my body

I think the first step is to be wealthy and have no kids. That way you have tons of free resources, and tons of free time, and enough free space.

I know plenty of people with enough friends to fill a little LAN like this. And setting one up is fairly cheap, if you don't want to build a house just for it, (a few switches and some cables); but not many adults I know have enough time or free enough calendars to get together for such an event more than once a year.

The kids will reach one day the age to be legit participants in LAN party. Just saying…

Surviving a fall from a bridge is not survivorship bias.

Improbable to be very significant, but it might actually be. The way/where they jumped off the bridge or how they hit the water may have influenced their chances of survival.

Edit: Implied is that how determined they were to commit suicide influenced their behavior before survival/death was fully out of their control.

Fair enough. I suppose it could change how one even enters the water.

What is the biggest fantasy series of our time?

A Song of Ice and Fire (contemporary writing I assume), it lost to Harry Potter book against one of GRRM’s best books/chance for win in novel category one year and Spin in another year(Accelerando was another nominee that year)

Surely on cultural impact Harry Potter has to win. While GoT had a decade flash in the pan, Harry Potter is still deeply in the cultural zeitgeist. "Muggles", "You're a Hufflepuff", etc have become cemented into our vocabulary.

GoT is undoubtedly more complex, interesting world, but it never had a generation of children reading the midnight book release. That the author actually penned the series finale is also worth something.

That's what I was thinking! I was sure my parent meant GoT.

But there can't be many metrics at all where GoT beats out HP for the title of "biggest fantasy series of our time".

The Hugo voting is kind of skewed since it’s a membership thing where anyone can join but one has to be aware of it and care enough to join.
